If they did it just for kicks, we'd agree these plungers were a little crazy for wearing next to nothing and jumping into icy Lake Michigan during March's freezing temps. But they're taking a dip to raise money for the Special Olympics Chicago, too. Vince Vaughn and Lady Gaga showed up have shown up for the chilly festivities in the past—perhaps this year Arnold Schwarzenegger will reprise his role as Mr. Freeze?

  • St. Patrick's Day Parade/River Dyeing

    03/10/2017

Our city is home to quite the St. Patrick's Day celebration! The Chicago River goes green as 45 pounds of vegetable dye color the water between Columbus and Wacker drives. Then festivities continue after as revelers parade up Columbus Dr. with floats and flags to the sound of bagpipes.

    River Dyeing

The dyeing of the river has been a tradition for many generations and attracts thousands of people dressed in green to see the action live. And by thousands, we mean 400,000 of your closest Irish loving friends! Sadly the coloring only lasts for about five hours, so be sure to get there right when it happens! If you're not sure where to watch the dyeing, the best viewing spots include:

    • East side of the Michigan Avenue Bridge
    • West side of the Columbus Drive Bridge
    • Along the banks of the Chicago Riverwalk between Michigan Avenue and Columbus Drive.

    The Parade

This parade is packed with all things Irish - colorful floats waving green/white/orange flags, troops of Irish step dancers, booming marching bands and bagpipers, and, of course, anything green! It happens rain or shine and lasts for about three hours. If you want more elbow and viewing room, we recommend snagging a spot toward the start of the parade in Grant Park (Columbus & Balbo).

  • Martin Luther King Day

    01/14/2018

Martin Luther King Day is a United States federal holiday. It is celebrated annually on the third Monday of January and is also known as King Day or MLK Day. In some states it is also commonly referred to as Civil Rights Day or Human Rights Day. In recent years it is increasingly seen to be a 'Day of Service' when Americans are encouraged to volunteer to help others less fortunate than themselves.

Martin Luther King Day commemorates the birthday of American civil rights leader Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and celebrates his life, achievements and legacy.

King was hugely influential in the American Civil Rights Movement (despite never holding public office) and was a major advocate of non-violent activism in the struggle for the end of racial discrimination under US law. He was assassinated in 1968.

This federal holiday in King's honor was created in 1983, during the presidency of Ronald Reagan, and first observed in January 1986. It is sometimes also referred to as "Civil Rights Day" or "Human Rights Day".
